Irma B.D. Thompson, 89, of Cannon Falls, died on Monday, May 16, 2011, at the Fairview Seminary Home in Red Wing.

Irma was born in Hamburg, Germany on October 8, 1921 to Willie and Amanda (Timmermann) Wohlers. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1926 at the age of five; her name appears on a plaque at Ellis Island in New York.

She married T. Orgene Thompson on June 13, 1941 in Eyota, MN. She was a longtime member of First Congregational Church in Cannon Falls.

Irma loved to cook and bake; she always had a pot of coffee and treats ready for anyone who stopped by her kitchen. She shared her skills as a baker working at the Cannonball truck stop. She worked closely with the planning of the Stonehouse and helped organize the kitchen there. She was a dairy milk tester for many years in rural Goodhue County. She was also active in FHA and 4-H with her daughters. She dearly loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.

She is survived by three daughters, Judith (Darrell) Freiheit of Lake City, Patricia (David) Olson of Cannon Falls and Tamy Marshall of Brooklyn Park; brother, Fred Wohlers; sister, Maxine (Don) Lillie; 11 grandchildren, Jeff Freiheit, Ross (Vicki) Freiheit, Chad Freiheit, Aric Freiheit, Kerry (Linda) Olson, Kim (Dan) Alstrup, Kristi (Mark) Schaut, Robyn (Paul) Berg, Tricia Olson, Shaunah Marshall and David Marshall; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and many other family and friends

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband T. Orgene on April 8, 1986; daughter, Wendi Thompson; grandson, Jasmine Smith and great-granddaughter, Nicole Schaut.

Memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls, with Barbara Martin officiating. Interment will be held at Grandview Memorial Garden in Rochester at a later date. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at church.
