River rescue on Big Cannon

A water rescue occurred on the Cannon River Monday, August 22.

Richard Finklea, 52, Minneapolis and Rendee Foster, 52, Hastings, launched from Riverside Park and shortly thereafter capsized near the public works building. Both were wearing personal flotation devises.

Foster lost sight of her friend, who went downstream. Around 12:34 p.m., someone on the bike trail observed a canoer holding on to a canoe who would soon be passing Welch Mill.

Two deputies were near the campground at Welch Mill and had throw bags. They separated on the river, giving them two opportunities to reach the canoe. Finklea was now in the submerged canoe, and was able to be pulled in.

Cannon Falls Police, Cannon Falls Fire/Rescue, Goodhue County Sheriff Office, Miesville Fire/Rescue, Red Wing Fire and Ambulance, the State Patrol helicopter, and M.A.R.T. were all involved in the rescue. ATVs were used on the trail to spot as the river was too high and hazardous to be in a boat.

Finklea had slight injuries, but refused medical attention.
