Since the opening of the new Mayo Clinic Health System facility last summer, future plans for the former facility at 1116 West Mill Street and the three adjacent properties have been discussed in great length. After receiving no offers to purchase the existing building and property, plans are in place for demolition of the former hospital facility in August, 2015. The property will then be divided into four building lots, which will be sold later this year.
"We've worked closely with the Cannon Falls' Economic Development Authority (EDA) and have determined the property can be best utilized to benefit residential needs in the community," says Bill Priest, operations administrator at Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls.
The building has been vacant since August, 2014 when the new medical center opened on County Road 24. Remaining equipment and furnishings from the old facility have been donated to local organization or given to charities. The structure known as the modular building located in the back of the facility was moved and donated to the Cannon Valley Fair Board earlier this year. Three houses that were used as office space near the medical center have also been sold. Additionally, Mayo Clinic Health System plans to donate the former patient parking lot across from the building to the City of Cannon Falls which will then be converted to a community park.
"The old facility served us very well for many, many years," says Priest. "We hope the property will be well suited for future Cannon Falls residents."
