Bernadine M.E. Wilkin, 93, formerly of Canfield, Ohio, died Tuesday morning, September 3, 2013, at Passavant Retirement Community, Zelienople, PA. Born in Cannon Falls, Minnesota on October 27, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Bernard C. and Ebba Johnson Peterson.
Bernadine worked as a school teacher in rural Minnesota, then as a medical secretary/technologist for Minneapolis surgeon Dr. R. Cranmer for four years after graduating from the College of Commerce there.
She married Malcolm H. Wilkin of Canfield, Ohio on September 14, 1946 and they were married for 65 years before his death in 2011. They lived in Canfield and were members of Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman, where Bernadine served as Sunday School teacher of the Confirmation age class for 11 years, was a member of the Lydia Miriam Circle, and served as president of the women's organization. She also belonged to and served as president of the Junior Wimodaughsis Club of Canfield and supported the Women's Committee for Children's Concerts of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra.
Surviving her are three children, Janice M. Gregory (Rev. Wayne), Clifford A. Wilkin (Debbie), and JoAnn W. Chonoska (Carol); sister Mary E. Peterson of Minneapolis, and brother Lowell M. Peterson of Blaine. She was the grandmother of Benjamin (Heather), Jessica, Kristina, and Chase; great-grandmother of Evelyn; and beloved aunt to many nephews and nieces.
Bernadine was preceded in death by brothers Ellwood L. Peterson and Alonzo D. Peterson.
A Memorial Service was held September 7 at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Pittsburgh, and was followed by visitation and an informal luncheon. Interment will be in Cannon Falls at a later date.
