Harry Kirchner, 85, died December 18, 2012. Diane lost her best friend. His children lost the best dad.
Harry was born July 24, 1927 at home on the farm in Eagan, to Harry and Lydia (Weierke) Kirchner. He went to Trinity Lone Oak Lutheran Church and School. After eighth grade he stayed on the farm to help his family. He made extra money by buying and selling animals.
He married Elaine Kirchner in September of 1948. He hauled animals from Roy Simons Auction Barn in Albert Lea to the Princeton Auction Barn, hauled cattle to the South St. Paul Stock Yards for farmers, and transported cattle to Mexico. If he could make money he was all for the adventure.
His love for his children will never end. With his son riding with him he picked milk cans up for the creamery; Cliff at age two was a favorite of the farm wives. When the family expanded, it was time to get off the road. He and Elaine bought a General Store in Mendota Heights. He then bought the land next to it and built a service station, added a 24/7 towing service and a snowplowing service.
Divorced and retired, Harry moved to Cannon Falls to be with Diane McCabe. Here he was known as "Chicken Harry" or "The Chickenman." He and his comrade, Ole Olson, traveled southeast Minnesota, buying and selling chickens, ducks, goats, and when the time was good, metal; anything to make a buck and have an adventure. He loved to deal.
After Ole died last June, Harry had said that Ole was calling him to join him. They are together again in heaven, making mischief and looking for the deal and the adventure.
Harry is survived by Diane, Elaine, his children: Cliff (Betsy), Denise, and Julie Schmitt (Craig); his grandchildren Rick (Angie), Mary, Jeff, Steve and Jason Roberts (Heather), Cameron Wolters-Schmitt, and Wade Schmitt; his siblings Rita Wagenknecht, Rolland Kirchner (Willo Rae), Iona Wagenknecht and Bernice Dittman (Loren); and many nieces and nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Willard, sisters Stella Pieper (Leonard), Marge Groess (Paul), and sister-in-law Ruby Kirchner, brothers-in-law Willard and Cal Wagenknecht.
A Memorial Service will be held January 2, 2013 at 11 a.m., with a gathering at 10 a.m., at Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 30370 Hardwood Way, Cannon Falls, MN.
