12/7/2017 9:07:00 AM Whitson breaks 1,000 in RHS win
by Mike Dalton
It didn't take Randolph senior Alyssa Whitson long to put herself into the RHS girls basketball record book Thursday. Needing only three points to reach 1,000 points for her career, Whitson scored on Randolph's first possession.
And to make things even better, the Rockets won the game - beating Kenyon-Wanamingo 39-35 Thursday night.
Whitson joins Jill Emery, Jeanne (Mulvihill) Werner, and Liz Mulvihill in the 1,000-point club.
The Rockets came out hot, scoring 29 points in the first half. They needed all those points, as K-W's defense held them to 10 second half points.
Megan Erickson led the team in scoring with 13 points. Hannah Neil added nine, Whitson seven, and Andrea Splichal and Lindsey Grant had five each.
Randolph opened the season Tuesday, November 28, and beat New Life Academy 68-48.
Five Rockets reached double figures: Whitson with 14 points, Neil and Grant 13, Erickson 12, and Splicahl 11. Ally Olson added three points and Kylie Blonigen two.
RHS started its conference schedule Friday on the road at Grand Meadow, and was sent home with a 63-45 loss.
"We executed poorly both defensively and on the offensive side of the ball," commented coach Dennis Trom. "We didn't play with a lot of energy."
Splichal scored 17 to lead the Rockets. Whitson had nine and Neil eight, and Neil had 13 rebounds.
The Rockets were at Pine Island Tuesday. They host Faribault BA on Thursday, go to Zumbrota-Mazeppa on Friday, and host Lyle-Pacelli on Tuesday, December 12.
