Curt Callstrom, owner of Lindahl Tire and Auto in downtown Cannon Falls, is gearing up for another softball season, and to defend a National Championship.
Callstrom, a Goodhue High School grad who grew up three miles east of White Rock, is part of the Minnesota Prize team that took the SSUSA Masters over-65 Championship in Las Vegas at the end of 2013. The team had taken an over-60 Championship in 2008 and has been a top four finisher a number of times.
Callstrom has been described as the fastest player in senior softball and even had an inside the park dinger at the 2013 championship tourney.
He says the Prize team, made up of him, Bill Sutter (former Goodhue wrestling coach) and a group of players from the Twin Cities, hss a very strong defense with good hands in the infield and speed in the outfield. At the championship level, not giving a team a fourth out is the key to success, he says.
Callstrom, 69, has been traveling to these national tournaments for about nine years. He has been able to see much of the country, competing in Georgia, Texas, Washington, Denver, Kansas City, Oregon, Rhode Island, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Chicago and Florida,
The competitions can test endurance as well. A recent tourney called for the team to play 11 games in four days as they battled out of a losers' bracket.
Curt played football, basketball, and baseball as a youth and got involved in hockey when his son, Dan, now a dentist in Cannon Falls, went out for the sport. Friends got him involved in softball.
