Rocket girls win own holiday tournament

by Mike Dalton

The RHS girls basketball team had a great Christmas break, winning their own holiday tournament last weekend.

After Triton took care of Grand Meadow 58-36, the Rockets faced their eastern rivals Cannon Falls, beating the Bombers 44-38.

Randolph was ice-cold in the 1st half, scoring only 18 points. They trailed 22-18 at the half.

The Rocket offense showed some life in the 2nd half, and an increase in defensive intensity allowed Randolph to take the lead.

"We missed a lot of lay-ups and easy baskets in the 1st half," commented coach Dennis Trom. "We couldn't get any offensive flow, but our defensive effort kept the game close.

"Our offense never really did get going, but our defense caused a lot of turnovers and bad shots in the 2nd half, and we eventually wore them down. It was a typical physical game."

Sami Bey and Karly Friedges led the team with nine points each. Carolyn Meyer had eight, Kelsie Jo Endres seven and Madi Taylor four. Bey also had 16 rebounds, eight blocked shots and five steals.

Both teams started the championship game with full-court pressure, and both teams played well. The Rocket offense was clicking, and they led 33-26 at the half before winning 59-51.

Randolph was able to build a 12-point lead late in the game, but the Cobras made a run and got it down to two. Late free throws allowed RHS to pull away.

"The girls came out ready to play," Trom said. "We moved the ball quickly in the 1st half, which led to us getting some open looks.

"We were efficient on defense in the 2nd half, and created some turnovers and tipped balls," Trom continued. "After Triton's run we were able to tighten up our defense."

Defensively, Friedges and Angie Hoey did a nice job on Triton's leading scorer, holding her to two field goals. Kori Friedges came off the bench and played good post defense.

Carolyn Meyer had a double-double, with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Endres had nine points, Wendy Splichal eight, Bey seven and Taylor six.

The Rockets host Maple River on Friday, Jan. 3, and they go to Glenville-Emmons on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
