The Cannon Falls-Randolph wrestling team placed second at New Prague Saturday, winning three matches and losing at the Trojans annual invitational.
A second-period pin by defending state champion Clay Broze at 285 sealed the deal in a 34-32 win over Sibley East in the first round. Cannon won the last four matches, starting with a pin by Derek Johnson at 182, a forfeit to Nathan Melhouse at 195, a pin by Cooper Rohloff at 220 and the pin by Broze at 285.
Others recording wins were Paul Fitterer, major decision at 120; Ryan Epps, dec. at 126; Hayden Strain, dec. at 145.
Cannon had little trouble with St. Peter in round two, winning 54-12. Winning matches were Wyatt Johnson, forfeit, 113; Paul Fitterer, technical fall, 120; Epps, dec., 126; Keston Lopez, fall, 132; Zach Holes, dec., 138; Connor Rohr, major dec., 145; Cole Grosland, forfeit, 160; Sterling Carlson, dec., 170; Johnson, fall, 182; Melhouse, fall, 195; and Broze, fall, 220.
Host New Prague gave CF-R its only loss in the next round, 51-20. Wyatt Johnson won by decision at 113, Paul Fitterer by major decision at 120, Epps by fall at 126, Derek Johnson by major decision at 195, and Broze by fall at 220.
Cannon's final match was against Waseca, a 48-25 win. Cannon won eight matches, all by pinfall. Winning were Fitterer at 120, Epps at 126, Lopez at 132, Carlson at 170, Derek Johnson at 182, Melhouse at 195, Broze at 220 and Rohloff at 285.
The Bombers opened the season with a tough loss against Zumbrota-Mazeppa Friday, 42-25. Fitterer won by decision, Epps by fall, Lopez by fall, Rohr by major decision and Broze by fall.
The squad is at Byron on Thursday, then at an invitational at Park-Cottage Grove on Saturday.
