Tayler Banitt and Maddie Adel narrowly missed out on a spot in the 2013 state individual tennis tournament, losing a true-second match Tuesday to the #1 seed from Lourdes.
The Bomber duo defeated the #2 seed team from Waseca 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals. They then faced the #5 seed from Waseca in the finals, losing 7-6 (8-6), 6-0. That set up a true second math with the section's #1 seed, Alexander and Kamath of Lourdes, losing 6-1, 6-0.
"We were the favorites in the final match but got off to a slow start," coach Paul Norstad said. "We came back and won the next five games and were up 40-0 on our serve to win the set, but ended up losing that game and eventually a tiebreaker. We never really got going in the second set.
"Not much went right in the true second match with Lourdes, so we ended up third - which is good, but we were so close to finishing first and going to state. Taylor and Maddie are both underclassmen, so hopefully they'll make another good run next year."
