Volleyball opens with a win, loss

The CFHS volleyball team opened the 2013 season by splitting their first two games.

Cannon beat Red Wing Thursday night in three sets. Scores were 25-14, 25-10, 25-11.

Lydia Franken had eight ace serves, and Hailey Huseth added three. Becca Vandenheuvel had 10 of the team's 33 digs, and Anna Nelson and Caroline Bowen had five each. Mada Hofstedt led with five kills, Huseth had four, and Hofstedt and Katie Noble each had three ace blocks. Franken led in assists with 11, and Huseth had seven.

CFHS opened the season last Tuesday against Apple Valley, losing in five sets. Scores were 17-25, 25-18, 25-20, 16-25, 8-15.

Leading the team in kills were Huseth and Hofstedt with seven each, Carly Broze had six and Noble five. Franken had 13 assists, Huseth 11, and Vandenheuvel had 18 digs. Hofstedt had five blocks, and Leah Meyers had three.

"We need to work on our hitting efficiency," coach Melissa Huseth said. "We have a variety of tempos in our attack and just need to be more consistent. We have a very balanced team, and each girl has a gift that benefits their team, and they know that each of them is necessary to accomplish their goals. We will be focusing on our serving and passing this season."

The squad was a Byron Tuesday night. They host Zumbrota-Mazeppa Thursday and Hayfield on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
