8/29/2013 3:00:00 PM Bears lose 1-0 at state tourney
by Mike Dalton
You'll have to forgive the Cannon Falls Bears for not answering the door the next time Avon comes calling.
For the second year in a row, the Bears were eliminated from the state amateur baseball tournament, and for the second year in a row it was by Avon, and by a 1-0 score.
Bears starter Keith Meyers was masterful, giving up eight hits and striking out 13 in 11 innings. One bad pitch - a solo home run in the 11th - proved the difference.
The Bears had chances throughout the game against Avon starter Kyle Collins. Cory Hedeen advanced to 3rd with no outs in the 7th, but was stranded. Cannon had runners as far as 2nd base in both the 9th and 11th innings.
Meyers went 2-5, and Hedeen, Rich Burr and Luke Winchell each had one hit.
The Bears finished the season with an 18-12 record.
