Three runs in the bottom of the 6th helped the Cannon Falls VFW baseball team to an opening round in the division tournament Saturday, but the rest of weekend was disappointing. Two losses eliminated Cannon from the tournament.
Braden Hartl laid down a squeeze bunt to drive in Garrett Beach with the tying run in the 6th. Nathan Melhouse scored all the way from second on a throwing error, and a sacrifice fly later in the inning gave CF a 2-run cushion and a 6-4 win over Albert Lea.
Quinton Lindow started and kept CF in the game for six innings. Carter Dombeck struck out three in the top of the 7th to earn a save.
Tanner Carlson and Beach each had three hits, Jonathan Sharot had two and Nick Lorentz and Lindow one each. Sharot had a double and a triple.
Cannon scored early and often against Winona, and led 11-7 after four innings. The wheels fell off in the top of the 7th, when Winona scored 12 runs to win 19-13.
"I don't know if I've ever seen an inning quite like the 7th, where everything that could have gone right for them did - and you know what that meant for us..." said coach Bucky Lindow.
Sharot, Dombeck and Jason Traynor all had three hits, Lindow, Beach and Melhouse had two each, and Lorentz and Carlson had one each.
A 14-2 loss to Albert Lea ended the Cannon season. CF got behind early, but couldn't get out of the hole they dug.
Sharot, Dombeck and Traynor had two hits, and Lindow, Hartl and Carlson had one each. Michael Monson took the loss.
Winona won the tournament with a 3-1 win over Albert Lea.
"The tourament ran very smoothly thanks to much volunteer help from parents and players," Lindow said, "and because of our great facility at John Burch Park. We were proud and excited to be one of the four teams hosting divisional tournament."
