Five compete at state wrestling

The Cannon Falls-Randolph high school wrestling team sent five wrestlers to the state class "AA" tournament Friday, and came home with a state title and a 3rd place finish.

Clay Broze at 220 placed 1st. He beat DJ Reker of Luverne by 17-5 decision, Cody Nylander of Perham by 6-4 decision, Joe Schiller, a defending state champion from Totino Grace, by 8-5 decision, and JD Struxness of Dawson by 11-10 decision in the title match.

Paul Fitterer placed 3rd at 103. He beat Cole Jones of Grand Rapids by 4-0 decision, then lost to Trevor Schultz of Fairmont 6-1; Schultz placed 2nd. Fitterer then beat Nate Carlson of Annandale by 15-0 technical fall, Anthony Philipson of Pequot Lakes by 7-2 decision, Gabe Shea of Kasson-Mantorville by 2-1 decision, and Jake Allar of Benilde-St. Margarets 4-2.

Ryan Epps wrestled at 113, but had to withdraw due to injury. He lost to Abbot Aho of Fergus Falls 11-4, then lost to Kyle Nordstrom of Simley by injury default. Aho placed 2nd.

Connor Rohr, at 132, lost to Jacob Steinbauer of Waconia 7-2 in his first match. Rohr was not eligible for wrestlebacks.

The same fate befell Justin Miest at 195. He lost to Mitch Struffert 4-2 in his opening match, and did not qualify for wrestlebacks.
