1/13/2013 1:55:00 PM Two tough losses for RHS girls
by Mike Dalton
The RHS girls basketball team hosted a holiday tournament in December, and suffered two disappointing losses.
Randolph opened with Cromwell, and saw a 12-point lead vanish into a two point loss, 52-50.
The Rockets led by 12 late in the 1st half, but Cromwell hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 34-28 at the half. RHS built its lead up to 12 points again, but went through a 12-minute scoring drought that culminated in a 47-47 game. After trading baskets, Cromwell made the go-ahead bucket with three seconds remaining.
"We played an awesome first half, but we mismanaged the lead in the second," coach Mike Haase said. "We rushed shots when they weren't necessary and it cost us the lead, and ultimately the game."
Carolyn Meyer had a tremendous game, with 21 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Breanna Wille and Madi Taylor each had five assists, Taylor Bickman had nine points, Jami Kusilek seven, Wille six, Jenny Werner four and Abby Meyer three.
The Rockets' second game of the tournament had an eerily similar feel to it, as Randolph lost a lead before losing the game to Triton, 55-53.
RHS led at halftime 29-25, but Triton was able to put together a run in the second half to tie things up. Randolph had the ball in the waning seconds with the score tied at 53, but mishandled the inbounds pass, giving up a steal and the go-ahead bucket. A last-second shot to tie just missed.
"It certainly wasn't that one play that caused us to lose," Haase said. "We shot 14-32 from the free throw line."
Kusilek had 11 points, Wille 10, Werner eight, Wendy Splichal four, Taylor four, Kelsie Jo Endres four, Ashleigh Dralle four, Bickman three, Sami Bey two, Karly Friedges two, and Josie Fields one.
On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the Rockets went to LeRoy-Ostrander for a competitive game that they lost 65-55. The were within four until the final minute, when L-O made their free throws.
Bickman and Wille each had 12 points, and Wille also had nine assists and seven steals. Abby Meyer, Taylor and Friedges each had six points, Bey and Dralle four, Carolyn Meyer three and Endres two.
Randolph faced a very good Faribault BA team on Friday, Dec. 21, and lost 51-21. "Faribault BA is ranked #3 in the state for a reason," Haase said. "Their zone defense makes it tough to get good shots off."
Carolyn Meyer had five points, Friedges four, Kusilek three, Abby Meyer, Endres, Bickman and Wille two and Dralle one.
The Rockets host Glenville Emmons on Thursday, go to NRHEG on Friday, then host Medford on Tuesday, Jan. 15.
