Hobgoblin Music is offering a unique musical experience this coming Saturday, January 25. Brian Miller and Randy Gosa are reviving songs that Paul Bunyan might have sung back in the glory days of logging in Minnesota. Much of their work is based on that of Mike Dean, who wrote and sang old traditional logging songs for folk song collectors in the 1920s.
The duo will give a workshop from 4 to 6 p.m. when they will guide students through the arranging of old songs and adapting them to various instruments. Just imagine those long winter evenings in the logging camps. There was plenty of time for making music!
The workshop will be followed by a concert at 7 p.m. The two mix a passion for northwoods history and folklore along with the music. There will be stories about Dean's life and historical photos from the logging days. At least one song from the workshop will be incorporated into the evening concert.
Tickets are $25 for the workshop, $15 for the concert, or $35 for both. For more information call 877-866-3936 toll free or locally in the Red Wing area 388-8400.
Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 will be having a movie event on Sunday, January 26, from 4-6:30 p.m.at the Lutheran Center in Vasa. Those who attend will choose the movie from a big variety available. There will be pizza and popcorn, too. It's OK to bring a friend. Although there is no cost for the activity, let Pastor Kristi know if you are coming so she can order plenty of pizza. firstname.lastname@example.org
Vasa Youth are making plans for Souper Bowl Sunday, February 2. They will be taking up a collection and accepting donations of non-perishable foods and household items for the Red Wing and Cannon Falls food shelf organizations. Following the morning worship service, they will be serving a delicious soup meal at the Lutheran Center.
The Wednesday evening meal will be potluck on January 29, at the Lutheran Center at 5:30. The next free community dinner will be on February 12. Lasagna is on the planned menu.
We're back in the deep freeze with highs near zero or a bit below. Stay warm! Remember Monday Morning Blend at the Lutheran Center from 10 to 11 a.m. A cup of hot chocolate is just the ticket! Everyone is welcome.
Until next week may your joys be many and your cares be few!
