City-owned facility

To the Editor,

The recent passing of Tom McMahon reminded me of his generous contribution to our city.

Cannon Falls and Red Wing were chosen to co-host the 1985 Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament.

This award was conditioned upon us making considerable upgrades to our facility.

The State Board required a covered grandstand to include seats with backrests, a large announcing booth, new restrooms and many other amenities.

Tom, an engineer and architect by trade, drew up all the necessary plans and blueprints. These were considerable and required a lot of time and work.

His bill to the tournament committee and city was exactly ZERO!

We had a very successful tournament and, in fact, were awarded (along with Red Wing) the 1991 tournament too.

All this reminds me of a point that has always bothered me.

The city and/or school has since put chains and padlocks on the gates to this park. They remain to this very day.

All this has accomplished is to keep our little kids with their gloves, balls, bats, bikes and puppies out of this city-owned facility.

As a baseball man, I know their little tennis shoes would do no damage to the playing surface.

This is absolutely WRONG and I'm sure Tom would have agreed with me.
