Life Church recently sent out a mailer inviting people to our Easter series called "Losing Your Religion." It has since come to my attention that many in our community were offended at the imagery and wording used in this mailing. For that, I wanted to apologize and offer an explanation.
Putting the various religious icons in the trash bin was an attempt to visually identify the way our culture has abandoned faith, essentially "trashing" or "losing their religion." We never intended to suggest that treating sacred objects of any religion with disregard is acceptable. Our mailer was meant to invite those who may have abandoned their religion to come back to faith, starting with a life giving relationship in Jesus Christ. For many, unfortunately, the wording we chose did not fully explain the original intent of that image.
It was never our intention to degrade any religion or branch of Christianity, whether Catholic or Protestant. We respect and value each church and individual in our community and would not intentionally offend any or put our cooperative relationship in jeopardy. The image and accompanying unclear message was, regretfully, in poor judgment.
I would like to ask our community to please accept my personal apology for potentially causing offense and distracting from the true meaning of Easter.
