To the editor:
An open meeting was held back on July 15 at the High School to discuss the future of the Cannon Community Theater (CTT). The meeting was advertised in the Beacon for two weeks prior to July 15 and unfortunately, the only attendees were previous Board members and past Presidents.
Most communities the size of Cannon Falls, or larger, have a very active community theater. Historically, CCT has produced many plays with fairly good attendance. It has been several years since the last production and the group needs to make a decision on the future of CCT. Surrounding communities such as Northfield, Red Wing, Hastings and others have developed programs with very strong interest, participation and support within their communities.
One of the main issues with the CCT is that of a permanent home. Previously, shows have been produced at the West Wind, Vasa School, Grandpa's Garage and Mill Street Tavern. A permanent home would certainly help in establishing CCT's identity.
Along with CCT, there has been interest in stabling an "Arts Council" to develop programs and avenues for other arts including the visual, pottery, music and dance. A few years ago, a committee was formed to research the interest level from the community. Activities were postponed at that time.
I believe that a strong arts/theater program within a community acts as an extension of programs at the school. A strong program gives a community an identity beyond just sports and encourages our youth to participate and also acts as an outlet for their creative talents.
Personally, I have volunteered to hopefully resurrect the CCT in the near future along with the development of an Arts Council. Another meeting with the past Board members will be held at the end of October to review the status. However, another "open" meeting for the entire community will be held in mid-October to answer questions and to again see the interest level in the community.
