The Cannon Falls Food Shelf is once again participating in the statewide March fundraising campaign initiated by the Minnesota FoodShare organization. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year for our community food shelf.
All dollars and food donations stay in Cannon Falls. The big advantage for us receiving donations in March is that, based on our totals, we receive a percentage of the $1 million that Minnesota FoodShare has already received from their sponsors. This is a great opportunity to stretch your donations and make a big impact on our food shelf.
Current economic factors mean many families must choose between paying bills and buying food. Cannon Falls Food Shelf had 305 families registered in 2012. 84 new families applied for assistance. We averaged about 135 families per month.
As manager I am able to stretch dollars donated by purchasing through our food bank, Channel One in Rochester. A good example is that I have been able to purchase cereal for 30 cents per box/bag! We also can order items, when available, from the USDA through our food bank. Another example - last week they had available whole chickens by the case for 0 dollars!
We gratefully accept food donations during March and all year long. They give a welcome variety to the foods we distribute. The Cannon Falls community has generously supported the Cannon Falls Food Shelf in the past and once again we need your help.
Please consider helping our friends and neighbors during our March campaign.
