I am a member of the committee organized to reach out to our community for donations to complete financing of our hospital and clinic. Most of the required funds have already been committed, namely $20 million by Mayo, approximately $3.5 million by the district, and about $4.5 million from community pledges and donations. This leaves about $2 million to be raised from local donors to complete the $30 million facility. The project can proceed with the current level of funding, but some elements will not be included to meet budget.
I believe that we are fortunate to have Mayo partnering with our community on this project. Since 1977, the hospital district has levied taxes on the City of Cannon Falls, and the Townships of Cannon Falls, Leon and Stanton. In 2005, that levy was $350,000. In 2013, it is zero. If the district had gone forward in 2005 with plans to build a new facility, the levy would have increased to fund it, and may have continued indefinitely.
I appeal to all local residents and businesses to financially support the project to build a new hospital for our community. For those in the district...no tax burden, going forward, and for members of the community outside the district who have not paid this tax, please join us with your financial support.
To those who have generously responded already, I say thank you very much. For those still pondering, please consider the importance to our community of this opportunity to provide quality hospital services now and for future generations.
