3/28/2014 2:18:00 PM Should 6th graders play junior high sports?

The last item of Monday's Cannon Falls School Board meeting led to the night's longest discussion-whether 6th-graders should be allowed to play on Junior High teams. There was concern about "bumping" older players for younger and how many grade levels up the chain that would be allowed.
Activities Director, Jake Winchell, said that most of the requests for allowing 6th-graders on Jr. High teams is merely to fill out the roster so there WAS a team. However, he admitted it could get out of hand, especially if the emphasis becomes crating a feeder system.
Siebenaler asked if other schools in the HVL allowed 6th-graders to play. Winchell said they did. Hodges interjected that the Minnesota State High School League rules "really frown" on it, although he was happy with "whatever gets the 6th-graders more active and involved in the school's culture. Bell concurred.
Student representative, Ryan Foster, said he had "no real opinion" but that it "depends on the sport and the numbers." Josh Davisson, who coaches boys basketball as well as being the District's General Manager, felt that if you allowed it for one sport, you'd have to allow it for all of them, but felt that girls sports would definitely benefit the most.
Winchell will put together sports numbers and recommend options at the next meeting.
