School board approves final levy increase

by Nora Bryson

Due to the 6-12 grade Christmas Choir Concert, the Cannon Falls School Board's Monday, Dec. 16 meeting was short. The Final Levy Certification was approved, as were the Finance Report, the 2nd readings of revised policies 208 (Development, Adoption, and Implementation of Policies) and 516 (Student Medications), and two teacher leaves of absences.

The Board approved the Final Levy Certification at $3,249,551.91 The overall change is an 8.44% increase with a 1.78 % increase to the general fund, a 3.25% decrease to Community Service, a 17.71% increase in Debt Service, and a 13.2% decrease in the OPEB (Other Post Employee Benefits) Service.

District General Manager Josh Davisson reported that the district has $3.7 million in cash and projections are good through February with the lowest balance being $1.7 million.

While no one attended the annual Truth in Taxation hearing, Superintendent Beth Giese explained that questions are always welcomed, regardless of what time of year.

The Board approved the 2nd readings of Policies #208 and 516. The change to Policy 208 requires the board review all policies every three years. Changes to Policy 516 have to do with legislative changes regarding the use of Epi Pens.

The Board granted two separate teacher leaves of absences: one for the birth of a child and another for medical reasons.

Board member Curt Beissel talked about the new, community-friendly signage outside the High School Auditorium. The Facilities Committee received several calls from parents and community members regarding the "negative signage" stating that photos and video taping were not allowed or that portions of the auditorium were "off limits" to the public. Head of Operations and Maintenance Dave Davisson apologized for the offensive signs and read aloud the new "guidelines" signs that have replaced them.

The next meeting will be Monday, Jan. 13, 2014 at 6 p.m. Agenda items include: organization of the Board and approval of the 2014-15 school calendar.
