Sixteen months after breaking ground to build the new facility for Mayo Clinic Health System-Cannon Falls, an open house Grand Opening celebration is being held this Friday, July 25. The new clinic is located at 32021 County 24 Blvd.
Abundant parking for the celebration is available at Cannon Falls High School and free shuttle service will be provided to the new medical center site. Shuttles leave every 10-15 minutes from 1:30-7:30 p.m.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. followed by facility tours from 3-7 p.m., along with free food, live music by Ray Sands and the Polka Dots, bounce houses and other activities for kids. The Mayo One helicopter will be landing on the helipad at about 4 p.m. and local emergency vehicles will also be available for those who would like vehicle tours.
In 1958 the Cannon Falls Community Hospital and Nursing Home was established to meet the needs of a smaller community. By 2006, it became a Mayo Health System satellite, and the need for a new and updated medical center was identified by the community and health system leadership.
From the old building's 33,000 square feet to the new building's 92,000 square feet, the new state-of-the-art facility includes a clinic, hospital and a 24/7 emergency department - all designed to provide a more seamless health care experience.
Employees from disciplines at the old medical center, such as nursing, medicine and administration, as well as patients were able to take part in the design phase of patient areas of the building. In the early planning stages of the new facility, a "mock" room at the Cannon Falls Mall was set up. Following the 3P approach to quality: people, product and process, those who would actually use the facility gave their input.
Expanded services will better meet needs including increased access to emergency care in time-sensitive, life-threatening situations, and more streamlined access to Mayo Clinic when needed.
The facility was built with many windows giving beautiful scenic views that along with interior design offer a healing experience to patients and caregivers alike. Another nice touch is a new quiet meditation room. There are lounges for various departments and a "tube system" for transporting lab work so that staff comes to the patient instead of the patient to the staff. It's faster and more efficient.
Some of the many innovative technologies will be on display during "behind the scenes" tours.
"Having the open house now allows people to come in and see areas that would not ordinarily be open to the public - like the emergency department and the operating room," explained Kristy Jacobson, Public Affairs Specialist.
The 45-acre site allows land for the medical center to expand, accommodating future growth and new services. But for now, the attractive and serene spaces create a healing environment which are comfortable, bright, warm and welcoming.
A fireworks display at dusk in downtown Cannon Falls will conclude the day's celebration.
