Five file for Goodhue County Commissioner

by Ken Haggerty

With Goodhue County Commissioner Richard Samuelson announcing he would not run again after 20 years in office, interest in the seat is high.

As of noon on June 3 (filing period closed at the end of June 3; withdrawals could be made through June 5), five people had filed for Samuelson's seat, one of five positions on the Goodhue County Board.

The seat represents the city of Cannon Falls and the Townships of Cannon Falls, Stanton, Vasa, Leon, Belle Creek and Minneola.

A primary will be held August 12 for races with more than two contestants. November elections will follow that.

Filing were:

Brad Anderson, 375th Street Way, Leon Township. Anderson has served on the Cannon Falls school board and the town board.

Nora Bryson Felton, County 24 Blvd., Stanton Township, who has been active in agricultural and educational groups around Cannon Falls.

Edward McNamara, 171st Avenue, Belle Creek Township, who has been on the town board and many agricultural groups, including the Soil and Water Conservation District.

Sarah J. Pettit, 440th St., Minneola Township, who has been on the town board and active in the Goodhue County Dairy Producers.

Sandy Wollschlager, 82nd Avenue Way, Cannon Falls Township, who has been on the Cannon Falls School Board and was in the Minnesota Legislature.

Henry challenges in Dakota

In Dakota County, one-term incumbent Mike Slavik of Hastings filed again. As of noon on June 3, his only filed challenger was Mike Henry of Castle Rock Township. Henry has been on the Dakota County Fair Board and has provided road and plow services to rural townships and cities.

State House seats

Local incumbent Republican Representatives Tim Kelly (Red Wing) and Pat Garofalo (Farmington) both filed for another two-year term. Filing by noon Tuesday against Kelly was Lynn Schoen of Wabasha (DFL). Marla Vagts of Farmington (DFL) filed against Garofalo.
