In a busy week of competition, the Cannon Falls speech team won two team trophies this week in tough competition.
Last Thursday, nearly 30 junior high speakers braved the wintry weather to compete at Mankota Loyola for the first time. The young speechies placed third behind St. Peter and host Loyola. Two days later, the entire squad placed second at the Huskies Invitational in Owatonna, in between local rivals Northfield and Rochester John Marshall. With three regular season tournaments to go, the speech team has placed in the top three at each competition this season.
A handful of speakers were event champions at each tournament. At Loyola, freshmen speakers Jordynn Zier (Drama) and Miranda Felton (Extemp Speaking) were able to finish their last JH tournament in first place. Winning top honors at Owatonna were captains Mary Franz (Drama), Sydney Erhardt (Extemp Speaking), Matt Breuer (Great Speeches) and Hannah Brummund (Storytelling). In finals, Mary, Sydney and Hannah each had number one ranks by all three judges in the round, known as a "picket fence" in speechie terms.
Additional award winners at Loyola included Vienna Qualey (3rd) in Creative Expression; Rachel Hartman (4th) and Carol Carpenter (7th) in Drama; Hannah Johnson (3rd), Katie Allen (5th), Elliot Bowman (6th) and Preston Parks (8th) in Extemp Reading; Braxton Ulrich (5th) in Humorous; Lindy Edstrom (4th) in Informative; Carley Norton (5th) and Hannah Singewald(8th) in Poetry; Allyssa Lee (5th) and Melissa Franz (7th) in Prose; Samantha Hamann (4th) and Iris French (6th) in Storytelling.

As the regular season is coming an end, the speech team looks forward to another busy week with a competition at Northfield on Saturday that's followed by the HVL Conference tournament the following Monday. The team will close out the regular season the following Saturday by hosting area teams for the Cannon Falls Last Chance Invitational.
