2/27/2014 2:44:00 PM Speech teams at two tournaments
The Cannon Falls speech team earned two team trophies this week in competition. First, 29 junior high speakers traveled to New Prague Middle School last Tuesday for a grades 6-9 tournament. The young CF speakers earned first place as a team. On Saturday, the full team headed to their biggest tournament of the season so far and the team placed third overall behind Northfield and Rochester John Marshall.
Of the thirteen MSHSL speech categories, CF had several event champions in each tournament. Junior high event champions at New Prague included Nick Bultena in Creative Expression, Jordynn Zier in Drama, Miranda Felton in Extemp Speaking, and Samantha Hamann in Storytelling. Event champions at Red Wing were juniors Sydney Erhardt in Extemp Speaking, Matt Lockett in Poetry and Hannah Brummund in Storytelling. Fellow junior Mary Franz tied for the top spot but was awarded 2nd place in Drama on tiebreaker.
Additional young speechies winning awards at New Prague were Vienna Qualey (2nd) and Maggie Sucher (Honorable Mention) in Creative Expression; Rachel Hartman (3rd) and Carol Carpenter (4th) in Drama; Hannah Johnson (2nd), Elliot Bowman (5th), Preston Parks (6th), Katie Allen (HM) and Kristy Allen (HM) in Extemp Reading; Michael Sermania (4th), Kadie Fales (HM) and Braxton Ulrich (HM) in Humorous; Lindy Edstrom (4th), Gabe Eppolite (HM) and Paige Garchow (HM) in Informative; Nick Engebretsen (6th) in Oratory; Hannah Singewald (3rd) and Carley Norton (4th) in Poetry; Allyssa Lee (3rd) and Melissa Franz (6th) in Prose; Iris French (3rd), Bryson Felton (HM), Ben Gibson (HM) and Ben Siebenaler (HM).
Earning awards at Red Wing last Saturday were Rachel Hartman (HM) in Drama; Emma Thomley (3rd) and Hannah Johnson (5th) in Extemp Reading; Miranda Felton (3rd) and Josh Siebenaler (6th) in Extemp Speaking; Matt Breuer (3rd) and Callie Loeschke in Great Speeches; Lily French (6th) in Humorous; Megan Bauer (HM) and Lindy Edstrom (HM) in Informative; Rianne Lund (HM) in Oratory; Brandon Stiles (7th) in Poetry; Melissa Franz (7th) and Allyssa Lee (HM) in Prose; Samantha Hamann (6th) and Bryson Felton (HM) in Storytelling.
The novice speakers are taking the week off from competition so that the varsity team members can head to Fairmont to test themselves against a wide range of southern Minnesota teams.
