by Ken Haggerty

The Olmsted Medical Center will open a branch clinic in Cannon Falls on Monday, August 5 at 1705 Highway 20 North on the north end of Cannon Falls.

The brand new facility will handle acute, chronic and preventive care.

The Clinic is the project of Dr. Karl Molenaar, a Cannon Falls native and Lake Byllesby resident who has practiced medicine in the area for 26 years. He is a board certified family medicine practitioner.

Molenaar will be joined by Dr. Peggy Lorentz, another Cannon Falls native who is a board certified ob/gyn practitioner and has practiced in the area for 24 years.

Also in the practice will be Dr. Dave Detert and Christine Werner, RN and Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP).

Detert is a board certified family medical practitioner who attended medical school at the University of Minnesota and completed his family medicine residency at the University of North Dakota Affiliated Hospital. Recently practicing near Litchfield, Detert took this opportunity to move closer to grandchildren in Northfield.

Christine Werner became a CNP after completing her training at Metropolitan State University. She's worked as a nurse for 16 years and serves as the nursing supervisor at Olmsted Medical Center - Cannon Falls.

Werner is the daughter of Glen (deceased) and Jean Mulvhill and grew up near Hampton, graduating from Randolph High School in 1986 before getting into nursing. She is married to Steve Werner and has three older children. They live near Greg's Meats.

Werner says she welcomes the opportunity to work in her home area and has previous experience with Molenaar and Lorentz that she is eager to renew.

Molenaar said the clinic will also employ three front desk staff, two LPNs and two lab/x-ray technicians.

An open house for the public to tour the facility will be planned for the coming month or so.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Phone number is 507-263-4900.

Treatment rooms will cover routine x-rays/blood work/suturing/stitches/splinting/casting/EKG/skin biopsies and removals/wart treatment/toenail removal among other procedures.

Started in Rochester in 1949, Olmsted Medical Center has grown to 17 locations including Pine Island and Wanamingo in this area. They all work with the Olmsted Medical Center - Hospital in Rochester which a Level IV trauma hospital with a 24-hour emergency department and BirthCenter.
