The Cannon Falls High School speech team hosted its annual home tournament on Saturday, the Cannon Falls Last Chance. Twenty-eight teams ranging from Houston to Stillwater competed in the high school and elementary buildings with better than expected weather for students and judges who had to walk between the two.
Seniors Becca Gesme (Great Speeches) and Kailee Stiles (Informative) were able to end their invitational speaking careers with event championships amid the tough competition. Joining them with a blue ribbon medal was Sydney Erhardt in Extemp Speaking. Seniors also making a finals appearance for their last regular season tournament were Cassandra Dulek (4th) in Creative Expression, Alexa Ochocki (5th) in Drama and Alex Traynor (4th) in Extemp Reading.
Additional award winners on the day were Cole Gardner (6th), Peter Hoffman (7th) and Brandon Stiles (HM) in Creative Expression; Austin Quam (HM), Ryan Foster (HM) and Madison Langdon (HM) in Discussion; Mary Franz (HM) in Drama; Josh Siebenaler (4th), Miranda Felton (5th) and Bjorn Pearson (HM) in Extemp Speaking; Matt Breuer (3rd) and Matt Moskal (7th) in Great Speeches; Megan Bauer (2nd) and Kjersten Monson (6th) in Informative; Aleena Kearns (5th) in Oratory; Chris Grovender (7th) and Amber Edwards (HM) in Poetry; Matt Lockett (HM) in Prose; and Hannah Brummund (3rd) in Storytelling.
As the name implies, the CF Last Chance tournament ends the regular season for the team. Uncharacteristically, the Subsection tournament was held two weeks ago. Thirty-one CF speechies get to extend their post-season performances this Saturday, April 13, at Sections at Byron HS.
