3/22/2013 10:56:00 AM Singer Ricky Skaggs to perform Friday, April 19
Shepherd's Center is proud to present Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder on Friday, April 19 at the Cannon Falls High School Auditorium. This 14-time Grammy Award winner has had 12 number one hits and has been chosen male vocalist and entertainer of the year by the Country Music Association.
"This is our main fundraising event of the year," said Shepherd's Center director Rod Johnson. "After the success of last year's concert, we wanted to continue bringing in nationally known talent to Cannon Falls. We want to give area residents the opportunity to enjoy world renowned talent and support Shepherd's Center at the same time."
In 1982, Ricky Skaggs became a member of the Grand Ole Opry, the youngest to ever be inducted at that time. Some of his number one hits include "Crying My Heart Out Over You," "Heartbroke," "Highway 40 Blues," "I Don't Care," "I Wouldn't Change You If I Could," "Honey (Open That Door)," "Uncle Pen," "Country Boy," and many more. Ricky and his ace backing band, Kentucky Thunder, have won eight Instrumental Group of the Year awards from the IBMA.
In 2012, Ricky Skaggs was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Past recipients of this prestigious award include Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton. Chet Atkins once credited Skaggs with "single-handedly saving country music." His life's path has taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music, to striking out on new musical journeys, while still leaving his musical roots intact.
"Bringing entertainment like this to Cannon Falls is a huge undertaking for Shepherd's Center," said Johnson. "To be successful we need the help of sponsors and the support of the community who will hopefully purchase tickets and fill the auditorium."
Two major sponsors have stepped forward already, Merchants Bank, along with First Farmers&Merchants Bank. Shepherd's Center is seeking additional sponsors and anyone interested should contact the center.
The show on Friday, April 19 will get underway at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. Tickets are $35 and available at Shepherd's Center, Scofield Drug, the Cannon Falls Chamber office and online at www.rickyskaggs.eventbrite.com. It is being advised to purchase tickets early as this concert will most likely be sold out.
Shepherd's Center features senior adults who volunteer their life experience and skills to benefit the community. A non-profit organization, the primary purpose is to enrich the age 55 plus years with opportunities to make a significant difference in not only your own life, but the lives of others.
