Cannon Falls Area Elementary is participating in their ninth annual American Diabetes Association's School Walk for Diabetes 2013 on Friday, April 26, from 3-4 p.m.
An educational school fundraiser that supports programs aimed at curing and preventing diabetes has Cannon Falls Schools preK-12 joining in raising money for this disease.
Students will learn about diabetes, nutrition, and exercise and may earn health rewards, such as water bottles, T-shirts, sports equipment, and more. Schools raising $1,000 or more earn a gift certificate to purchase needed physical education equipment or school medical supplies. Last year the school earned more than $3,000 in free equipment for their participation in the Walk.
Students and CF staff members with diabetes include students Loden Bell, a fourth grader diagnosed with Type 1 in January 2007; Anna Schroeder, a seventh grader diagnosed with Type 1 in March 2005; Molly Thomforde, an eleventh grader diagnosed with Type 1 in March, 2002; staff members Pam Langevin, diagnosed with Type 1, 22 years ago; and Wendy Robinson who has had Type 2 for seven years.
This year's theme is "Kick Diabetes." The football themed fundraiser will also be selling red plastic minifootballs for $2.50. All proceeds will go to the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
Last year the school collected more than $14,000, and was the top fundraising school in Minnesota for the sixth year in a row.
On the day of the Walk (April 26) at 3 p.m. students should sign in at their grade level table in the Elementary cafeteria. They will then begin walking, and enjoy refreshments and snacks provided by the Cannon Falls Elementary PTO and First Farmers and Merchants Bank, returning to the Elementary at 4 p.m.
Parents are welcome to come with their child to this event, especially with preschoolers.
