This year's kick off to the holiday shopping season in Cannon Falls is this Saturday, Nov. 24, with Deck the Falls 2012.
City of Cannon Falls Public Works Department has festively decorated the downtown area with garland and wreaths.
Not only is it Deck the Falls day in Cannon Falls, but it is also Small Business Saturday, when shoppers are encouraged to support local businesses.
Along with the Deck the Falls events planned for Saturday, local merchants will have their businesses all "decked out" for the season and many will offer specials throughout the day.
While shopping and visiting local businesses, shoppers can register to qualify for the holiday drawing that takes place immediately following the parade at the gazebo.
Registration boxes will be at EconoFoods, First Farmers&Merchants Bank, Acacia Studios Massage & Healing Center, Community Resource Bank, Scofield Drug & Gift, Althoff Hardware, Hjermstad Hardware, Pat LeVesque, Merchants Bank, and Hi-Quality Bakery.
Chamber Dollars totaling $600 will be given away to nine winners who must be present to win. There will be one $200 prize, two $100 prizes, two $50 prizes, and four $25 prizes.
National Honor Society members will be collecting donations for the Salvation Army from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be visiting with children and collecting toys for the Toys for Tots program at Hi-Quality Bakery from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m.
The Cannon Falls Museum will be open and spectators can watch while museum staff make krumkake on site. Local storyteller Meg Judge will be at the Museum sharing holiday stories at noon and again at 1 p.m.
Before the parade that starts at 5 p.m., warm yourself with a tasty bowl of chili made by the Vasa 4-H Club who will be selling the chili to raise funds for the Veterans Memorial.
Enjoy a cup of hot cider compliments of Nelson Insurance. Enjoy live music at the Cannon River Winery. Watch the Deck the Falls parade at 5 p.m., and see the official lighting of the Cannon Falls community Christmas tree when the parade concludes.
For a perfect way to end the day and begin the Season, gather at the Church of the Redeemer for their annual Christmas Carol Sing-A-Long. A complete schedule of the day's events can be found at www.cannonfalls.org or picked up at most area businesses.
